How to evaluate the leaf blowers
Many people are frustrated and overwhelmed when they figure out how to choose the right one.
I have been asked time and time again what is best for me and decided to pinpoint which ones are best for me and to create this guide.
I did a lot of research to get you my truthful ratings of the best in the market. I’ve read and compared hundreds of reviews and ratings by reviewing the specifications of each model and asking myself the following questions.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
- Does it have unique characteristics that are worth mentioning?
- What is the cost?
- Do the performance and characteristics of the most expensive devices justify their higher price?
- Which machine is the most reliable or has a better warranty?
- Is it accompanied by a good instruction manual or is there a manual that is easily accessible online?
After all my research, I believe that the following features are the most important for the purchase of a new model.
This purchase will be an investment; the one you want to get for your money.
Make sure that all the models you look at are made of durable, high quality materials from a reputable manufacturer. The outer casing must be made of reliable plastic to hold it easily, with reliable internal metal mechanisms for strength and durability.
As with most outdoor electrical appliances, all models come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Usually these are limited warranties for material or workmanship defects in the product itself.
They usually do not cover the supplied accessories, damage to property due to operating errors, or natural wear and tear due to normal use.
Each manufacturer offers a different warranty.
According to my research, a 2-year warranty corresponds to the industry average and in most cases correctly covers material defects or the manufacturing process.
Some manufacturers, or even the dealer you buy, offer an extended warranty for an additional fee; for more expensive equipment, it may be worth investing additional money.
Performance (MPH & CFM)
With respect to air flow, you look at both miles per hour (MPH) and cubic feet per minute (CFM). These two specifications describe the amount of air that exits the equipment and the force with which it does so. 
MPH tells you how fast the air moves – a measure that most people are familiar with, because the air speed or vehicle speed is usually described in this device. A model capable of higher/faster MPH is useful when moving heavy or wet objects, but it is not the only factor you should consider.
The truth is that a higher speed does not mean a better wind tunnel.
CFM shows you the volume of air moving through the tube in one minute, describing the blowing force. A unit with a PCM of 450 can move 450 cubic feet of leaves in one minute.
CFM determines the actual force of the blower with its ability to move debris and leaves away.
So, is one rating more important than the other?
Yes, and no.
You need a combination of MPH and CFM to get the job done efficiently and quickly. The air speed must be high enough to do more than crumple the leaves on the ground; the amount of air circulating in the fan must be large enough to move large quantities.
In general, the higher the MPH, the more expensive the device. However, I suggest that a higher ECHP and a lower MPH may be the best choices.
Noise and emission levels
The volume of your fan depends on the type of power it uses. In general, gas models are the noisiest; electric and battery-powered motors are quieter.
Regardless of the motor, the machine will continue to make noise, as the fan pushes air at a high flow rate through a small opening.
It is undeniable that the noise level of leaf blowers can be high and is subject to criticism from people in the vicinity. On average, they are between 60 and 110 decibels. 
One of the disadvantages is that the noise they create is different from that produced by lawnmowers or snow blowers.
A study published in the Journal of Environmental and Toxicological Studies examined the characteristics of sound components and determined that more low-frequency components allow noise to travel longer distances and penetrate building walls.
The noise of gas blowers can be so loud and intolerable for some people that it has been banned in more than 80 cities across the country. This is one of the main reasons why many environmentally conscious users choose battery-powered fans.
In addition to noise, some also emit smoke and air pollutants into the atmosphere.
Numerous studies have shown that gas blowers emit 26 times more carbon monoxide, 49 times more particles and 498 times more hydrocarbons than a typical car’s one hour of operation.
I don’t know about you, but I was shocked to hear that! In this respect, wireless products and electrical products that do not emit smoke are more environmentally friendly.
This does not mean that these guys do not pose environmental problems, of course….
Any one of the different fans can stir up a lot of particles in the air, which bothers people with allergies, asthmatics, children and the elderly. These particles can include pesticides, chemicals, animal excrement, pollen, mould and even lead in minute quantities.
It is therefore important to consider where you blow the debris you are moving and wear a dust mask over your mouth and nose if you are afraid to breathe.
Maintenance is necessary to keep your equipment in perfect shape and ensure maximum durability.
The maintenance and cleaning required differ slightly depending on whether it is gas, wireless or runs out with electricity.
Gas models require annual replacement of the spark plug, in addition to routine cleaning of the fuel filter and carburetor to facilitate starting and smooth operation. If you are not mechanically inclined this can be a job that you rent to a small local engine repair service.
The air intake filter must also be checked regularly and, if necessary, cleaned. This can be done simply by removing the air filter from the housing and gently tapping the ground or against a clean surface to remove dust.
For winter storage, it is important to remove the gas that may contain ethanol from the engine.
Drain the tank into an appropriate container, making sure to purge the primer bulb to empty the fuel lines. After having emptied the gas, add an ethanol treatment bottle and purge the bulb again to move the treatment through the carburetor and the lines.
Electric and wireless models do not require much maintenance.
The most important thing with a battery powered model is to make sure the battery is charged and ready to go!
With electric ones regularly check the rope on the product and the extension that is used to check that there are no signs of wear or damage.
Remove the batteries of wireless models before winter storage by keeping the battery in an area that stays above cold temperatures.
On all types of units, check the blower tubes regularly to check for blockages and debris, removing any obstructions. It is also good practice to periodically clean the outside with a solution of diluted liquid soap to remove the dust, making sure to stay away from the engine and other sharp components.
The included accessories can greatly affect the cleaning efficiency of your site.
Although they are not a necessity, I think the following are important to look for:
- Adjustable shoulder straps for shoulders and / or hips.
- Concentration nozzle for confined spaces.
- Oscillating tube with wider and flatter nozzle.
There is a wide variation in price between the simple portable models and the commercial units with driver on foot. Their price depends on the attributes they offer, the type and power of the engine, etc.
Commercial blowers are more powerful, but have a higher purchase price. The models recommended here have a price ranging from 90 to 275 dollars, with an average price of around 170 dollars.
Ease of use
It is important that when comparing leaf blowers the chosen model feels comfortable in the hands or on the back instead of bulky or bulky. All models included in my review guide can be managed by a home owner, you don’t need to be a professional landscape designer to use them.

- Ergonomic design – The throttle controls of modern blowers are specifically designed to keep the wrist and hand in natural positions. This will reduce fatigue when moving heaps of leaves for hours. In general, a portable blower is more comfortable and easier to use and is perfectly capable of meeting the needs of many homeowners.
Portable products weigh much less than rucksacks or hand-held blowers, have a much lower price, and still do a little work on leaves and debris on sidewalks and walkways.
Many offer multiple accessories and some can even be turned into shredders and vacuum cleaners.
They may not be as powerful as other types of blowers, but this does not prevent them from being popular choices with residential homeowners.
A walk-behind is a wheeled unit that walks and pushes like a lawnmower.
They are available in 4 different grades to suit a variety of uses.
- Medium quality
Their main advantage over other types is the amount of air they can blow and the speed at which they do it. A bigger engine means more power.
Walking on foot are good if you have acres of leaves to clear, run a commercial business, or have a physical disorder that makes it difficult to carry a laptop or backpack model.
On the other hand, they are all gas units, so they are noisy and emit fumes when they are in operation. They are also heavier than other blowers; self-propelled engines help lighten that weight but can still be cumbersome to maneuver.
Choice of a type of power
As for the power supply, there are 3 different options: petrol, cordless (battery) and electric.
Each of them has its pros and cons.
- The petrol units are powerful, but noisy, and emit exhaust fumes.
- Battery-powered blowers have great autonomy and mobility, but they are heavy and have limited operating time.
- Electric models are less powerful than gasoline and keep you tied to a power socket through an extension, but they are lighter and quieter.
A gasoline blower will provide you with maximum power and maximum air speed thanks to the extra force it can produce. They do a quick job of great jobs and are a good choice if you have a lot of land to cover.
Gas fans work like traditional gas mowers. They contain a gas chamber that must be filled and maintained correctly, but offer extended use without the need to use an extension cord or a rechargeable battery.
The smaller 2-stroke engines provide an excellent balance between weight and power, but you need to use a mixture of petrol and oil. You can buy this premixed mixture or mix it yourself.
A 4-stroke engine is a little heavier, but only works on gas, denying the need to mix fuel.
With the addition of force, however, higher vibrations, noise and exhaust gas emissions are obtained, which generally must be started with a pull starter rope. Their extra weight makes them even more tiring to transport and maneuver.

Wireless (battery powered)
A battery-powered blower is a smart choice if you have a larger surface area to cover, but not an expanse where a shoulder blower is best suited. You will enjoy greater autonomy and mobility, since there will not be a cable that holds you back.
Battery-powered blowers are less noisy than gas-powered blowers.
They will be a bit heavier due to the battery and will have to be recharged frequently. Just remember that a rechargeable battery has an operating time limit of up to one hour (even less if you run it at full speed) so you have some idle time waiting for the battery to recharge.
Battery-powered OPE (Overall Production Efficiency) is an important consideration when buying a wireless blower.
The longer the execution time, the more you will be able to use it between charges. This is important if you have many properties to delete or if you don’t want to buy extra batteries.
Look for lithium ion batteries that, if used regularly, will last 4-6 years, before you need to buy a new one.
Nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries are not as powerful and do not last that long.
Many manufacturers are now making a battery that can be used throughout their product line; an additional advantage if you already have battery-powered tools.

The output of an electric or cable model approaches the same power that the gas blowers make without the messy, smelly and heavy gas chamber. The lack of a gas chamber is also equivalent to a lower weight.
Electric blowers are fairly quiet, unlike many gas blowers that emit a lot of noise. Many electric blowers work silently at 69 dBA (decibels), which is as quiet as the blowers. They are more environmentally friendly and require almost no maintenance.
However, it is necessary to connect the blower to the wall, which is why they are more often recommended for homeowners instead of commercial applications.
It’s not a good idea if you have a lot of ground to cover.
A corded model is the best solution if you want one-handed use, low cost, zero exhaust emissions, and a start button.

What to watch

Difference between cheap and expensive models
There is a perfect model for every taste and every budget.
The cost difference between the models depends on the brand you buy and a variety of other specifications, including wind speed and power.
On the less expensive side there are smaller and less powerful blowers. They work well for homeowners with a small yard or just a few trees that drop their leaves.However, generally the least expensive models do not last that long and are usually heavier.
With the price increase, there are very powerful blowers that often have the ability to work as a vacuum cleaner and shredder. They perform the same functions as the blowers with the possibility of mulching the leaves in a fraction of their original size. These are perfect if you have a bigger yard.

As with most consumer products, in most cases “you get what you pay for” .
I don’t know about you, but when I find the time to work on my lawn, I don’t want to worry about my equipment not working. So I look for the products I buy carefully and buy the best I can afford.
Here are some differences between cheap and expensive models.
- Lighter jobs than heavy jobs – A low-cost model is more suitable for cleaning sidewalks and driveways. A more expensive blower should have the power to tackle large yards with lots of leaves and the ability to move wet and heavy debris. Read the description and make sure it has an adequate amount of CFM and MPH.
- Engines – The engines will be smaller and less reliable on less expensive models. The most expensive blowers will be equipped with much more powerful and reliable engines.
- Anti-vibration technology – Let’s face it, all the machines emit vibrations regardless of their construction. The more expensive blowers will have reduced vibrations that will make the operation much more comfortable for the wrists and hands, and can also reduce fatigue and reduce discomfort in the shoulders and back.
- Speed control – The most economical blowers run at one speed. High-end fans offer variable throttle or multiple-speed adjustment. Some will even have a cruise control mode.
- Guarantees – The more expensive the machine, the better the warranty and customer support should be – in theory. Look for a model with a multi-year warranty.

Do you have a limited budget? What are the dimensions of the yard and how many trees do you have?
If you have a smaller yard and really don’t need all the bells and whistles of a fancy model, then skip the more expensive gas models and opt for an electric or cable unit.
Big construction sites with lots of leaves to deal with, require a durable model with more features and a stronger engine to quickly put a large project out of service. In this case, it would be better to spend more money on something with more power that fits the size of your yard.

A. Yes, you can use some types of leaf blowers in the rain. The question of whether to use them in the rain is completely different. Wireless or electric fans carry the risk of electric shock and short-circuit of the components, if used in rainy conditions, and must be avoided.
